SO Why choose TARMAC?
Low Maintenance
Tarmac is very low maintenance. It doesn't suffer from self-seeding weeds like block paving, nor does it move like gravel. It's a highly practical smooth surface that is quick to install and extremely hard wearing.
Cost Effective
Tarmac is one of the more affordable driveway solutions, compared to resin or block paving. It's often chosen as a practical solution, rather than it's decorative appearance. But it can be attractive when coupled with block paving.
Long Lasting
Tarmac is durable, hard wearing and very long lasting, providing it is installed correctly with strong foundations and edge restraints/kerbs. It's perfect for family homes with multiple vehicles.
The installation process - the important details
Excavation & Restraints
We always excavate to a minimum depth of 150mm for tarmac driveways. We then install fixed kerbs and restraining edges to provide maximum stability to the tarmac driveway and to prevent degrading and spread.
MOT Type 1 Sub-base
We use MOT Type 1. Type 1 compacts into a dense, solid layer that supports vehicle weight and distributes loads evenly, helping to prevent the driveway from sinking or developing ruts over time. Because it contains a graded mix of stone sizes, ranging from larger pieces to fine dust, the particles interlock effectively when compacted to create a firm and stable base.
Compacted in layers
To ensure full compaction throughout the entire depth of the sub-base we compact in layers. This is essential for achieving maximum density and preventing future settlement.
50mm Binding Base Coarse
The sub-base consists of 50mm of tarmac, commonly known as AC20 dense binder. This provides the strength to the drive and its load bearing capacity. A properly sized binder layer helps stop the driveway from cracking, sinking, or developing wheel ruts under repeated traffic. It's this process that many less reputable companies often skip and go straight to the finish coarse. In time the drive will fail prematurely and crack because the surface layer alone is not designed to provide the main structural strength.
30mm SMA Top Finish
We complete the driveway with a 30mm depth of SMA tarmac. This 30mm comprises of 6mm aggregates. This provides the durable, smooth wearing surface that finishes and protects the driveway. SMA is designed to withstand everyday vehicle traffic, tyre movement, and turning without wearing quickly. It is widely used because of its durability and resistance to deformation/rutting.
Hi-Quality Workmanship
We don't skip or cut corners when it comes to our tarmac driveways. That's why we've listed in detail the steps we take for a tarmac driveway installation. We put so much attention into the sub-base and binder coarse, because without this, a tarmac driveway will fail prematurely. Choosing Aspire Drives is the right choose when it comes to deciding to have a tarmac driveway installed in Birmingham.
